Zygina sp. 1
Common name: Bridal Creeper Leafhopper
Unknown.
Found on Bridal Creeper, Asparagus asparagoides, plants.
This bug was approximately 2.5 millimetres long.
The Bridal Creeper Leafhopper was released in Australia as a biological control agent for Bridal Creeper, Asparagus asparagoides, in July 1999. The leafhopper doesn’t kill the plant but can impact its growth, thereby limiting its ability to spread. The leafhopper does this by piercing the plant cells and eating the contents. Where there are a great number of leafhoppers this can turn all of the leaves of a plant white.
The adults live for approximately 6 to 8 weeks. During this time the females can lay 180 eggs. The eggs take 2 weeks to hatch and the nymphs take another 2 weeks to reach adulthood. This short life cycle enables the Bridal Creeper Leafhopper to have several generations per year.
