Gilbert’s Honeyeater

Scientific name: Melithreptus chloropsis

Meaning of name:

Melithreptus is from the Greek words meli, meaning honey, and threptos, meaning nourished. The meaning of chloropsis is not known.

Aboriginal Name:

Djinki (cheen’key).

Distribution:

Found in the southwest of Western Australia.

Description:

Up to 15.5 centimetres long with a 23.5 centimetre wingspan.

Notes:

The furthest distance recorded by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme for this species of bird to travel is 4 km. The oldest bird recorded was still alive when its band was read in May 2015, 9 years 5.6 months after being banded (information as at 10 November 2023).

The photographs for this species were not taken in the reserves of interest to the FQPB.
