Western Gerygone

Scientific name: Gerygone fusca

Meaning of name:

Gerygone is a Greek word meaning born of sound. Fusca is from the Latin word fuscus, meaning brown.

Aboriginal Name:

Warylbodang (wor’il’bore’dang).

Distribution:

Widespread in southwestern and southeastern areas of Australia with scattered populations elsewhere.

Description:

Up to 11.5 centimetres long with a 16.5 centimetre wingspan.

Notes:

The furthest distance recorded by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme for this species of bird to travel is 9 km. The oldest bird recorded was still alive when its band was read in September 1999, 5 years 3.8 months after being banded (information as at 21 June 2012).
