Tawny Frogmouth

Podargus is from the French name podarge given to frogmouths by Cuvier with reference to their short, weak toes. In Greek it means a gouty man. Strigoides is adapted from ‘Strigoid Goatsucker’, a name given to this bird by Latham.

Widespread across Australia.

From 35 – 50 centimetres long with a wingspan of 75 – 95 centimetres.

The furthest distance recorded by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme for this species of bird to travel is 76km. The oldest bird recorded was recovered 17 years 10.8 months after being banded (information as at 12 June 2015).
