Rufous Whistler
Scientific name: Pachycephala rufiventris
Pachycephala is from the Greek words pachys, meaning thick, and cephale, meaning head. Rufiventris is from the Latin words rufus, meaning red, and venter, meaning belly.
Bambon (bam’born).
Widespread on mainland Australia.
Up to 18 centimetres long with a 30 centimetres wingspan.
The furthest distance recorded by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme for this species of bird to travel is 88km. The oldest bird recorded was still alive when its band was read in August 1986, 15 years 2.7 months after being banded (information as at 20 June 2012).
