Novius cardinalis

Common name: Cardinal Ladybird

Meaning of name:

Unknown.

Distribution:

Reported from south west and south east Australia and introduced around the world.

Description:

This beetle was approximately 3 millimetres long.

Notes:

Novius cardinalis has been exported to many countries around the world as a biological control for Cottony Cushion Scale, Icerya purchasi. Its ability to quickly control the scale has saved many citrus orchards from ruin.

We have photographed it in December.

This species was previously known as Rodolia cardinalis.
