Rentinus dilatatus

Meaning of name:

Unknown.

Distribution:

Reported from every Australian state and territory.

Description:

This bug was approximately 24 millimetres long.

Notes:

This bug is commonly known as a lanternfly. They earned this common name as it was once believed that their elongated “nose”, the so-called lantern, was luminous at night in the living insect. Unfortunately, this is not true.

We have photographed this bug in November.
