Painted Button-quail

Scientific name: Turnix varius

Meaning of name:

Turnix is Latin for quail. Varius is Latin for different.

Aboriginal Name:

Boorolom (bore’awe’lawm).

Distribution:

Found in the southwest, east and southeast of Australia.

Description:

Up to 23 centimetres long with a 38 centimetre wingspan.

Notes:

The furthest distance recorded by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme for this species of bird to travel is 2 km. The oldest bird recorded was recovered 7.9 months after being banded (information as at 30 November 2013). These figures are probably an underestimate as there have only been 7 records made.
