Little Eagle

Hieraaetus is from the Greek words hierax, meaning hawk, and aetos, meaning eagle. Morphnoides is from the Greek words morphnos, a kind of eagle, and –oides, meaning like.

Widespread across Australia but absent from the sandy deserts, Nullarbor Plain and the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Up to 55 centimetres long with a 135 centimetre wingspan.

The furthest distance recorded by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme for this species of bird to travel is 2,885 km. The oldest bird recorded was recovered 25 years 11.2 months after being banded (information as at 14 June 2012).
