




Laughing Kookaburra
Scientific name: Dacelo novaeguineae
Dacelo is an anagram of Alcedo, a genus of Kingfishers. Novaeguineae is named after New Guinea, however the bird doesn’t occur there.
Native to the east and southeast coast of mainland Australia. Introduced to Tasmania and the southwest of Western Australia.
Up to 48 centimetres long with an 80 centimetre wingspan.
The furthest distance recorded by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme for this species of bird to travel is 729km. The oldest bird recorded was still alive when its band was read in October 2002, 15 years 2.8 months after being banded (information as at 20 June 2012).
