Lampona sp. 1
Common name: White-tailed Spider
Unknown.
Unknown.
This spider has a body length of approximately 15 millimetres. The abdomen has a white spot at the end and two pairs of spots on the upper side.
White-tailed spiders don’t make a web but shelter under bark, rocks and leaves in the bush and around houses. They eat other spiders and prefer the Black House Spider, Badumna insignis.
The bites of White-tailed Spiders can cause initial burning pain followed by swelling and itching at the site. Recent studies of people confirmed bitten by White-tailed Spiders has shown no evidence that the spiders cause ulceration and necrotising arachnidism (a flesh-eating condition).
We have photographed this spider in February and March.
