







Simosyrphus grandicornis
Meaning of name:
Unknown.
Distribution:
Native to, and found throughout, Australia but accidentally introduced to New Zealand and many Pacific islands.
Description:
This hover fly was approximately 8 millimetres long.
Notes:
The young are grubs that feed on aphids and other soft-bodied arthropods. The adults feed on pollen and are good pollinators.
We have photographed this species in April, July, October and November.
