Grey Teal

Scientific name: Anas gracilis

Meaning of name:

Anas is Latin for duck. Gracilis is Latin for thin or slender.

Aboriginal Name:

Kalyong (kal’yawng).

Distribution:

Found throughout Australia but rarer in the drier interior.

Description:

Up to 44 centimetres long with a 67 centimetre wingspan.

Notes:

The furthest distance recorded by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme for this species of bird to travel is 3,184 km. The oldest bird recorded was still alive when its band was read in August 1989, 31 years 8.3 months after being banded (information as at 14 June 2012).
