The body is up to 74 centimetres long with a 45 centimetre long tail. The coat is a reddish-brown colour above and white below.

The fox was deliberately introduced into Australia near Melbourne in the 1860s for sporting purposes. By 1917 it had reached Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. It is now found almost everywhere in Australia.

Foxes are a major threat to our native animals. The shells of Southwestern Snake-necked Turtles are regularly found having been eaten by foxes. Where a fox is found in the bushland it is trapped and removed.
