A heavily built and hairy spider that comes in a variety of colours and patterns. They are from 15 millimetres (male) – 30 millimetres (female) long.

These are the common garden spiders that make that familiar vertical orb-web, often at face level. The web is usually eaten after a night’s use and renewed the next evening. During the day the spiders remain in hiding nearby. It eats night-flying insects but is not poisonous to humans.
