



Dusky Moorhen
Scientific name: Gallinula tenebrosa
Gallinula is Latin for a little hen or chicken. Tenebrosa is from the Latin word tenebrosus, meaning dark.
Found in the south west of Western Australia with outlying populations around Esperance, Dampier and Port Hedland. Widespread in the eastern states.
Up to 40 centimetres long with a 65 centimetre wingspan.
The furthest distance recorded by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme for this species of bird to travel is 286 km. The oldest bird recorded was still alive when its band was read in February 1974, 8 years 11.8 months after being banded (information as at 20 December 2017).
