Dugite

Scientific name: Pseudonaja affinis

Meaning of name:

Pseudonaja is from the Greek word pseudes, meaning false, and Naja, being the cobra genus. Affinis is Latin meaning related. It refers to the Dugite being related to the Gwardar.

Distribution:

Occurs from just north of Perth to Adelaide in South Australia.

Description:

A large, fast moving snake to 2 metres long. Their colouring is highly variable, pale to dark brown, yellow, reddish brown, olive, green or black. They are often marked with irregular darker spots or blotches.

Notes:

Mating occurs in spring. The female lays one, or sometimes two, clutches of 10 – 30 eggs between November and February. Hatching occurs from February to May.
