Burton’s Snake-lizard

Scientific name: Lialis burtonis

Meaning of name:

The meaning of Lialis is not known. Burtonis honours James Burton, a donor of specimens of lizards to the British Museum.

Distribution:

The whole of Australia except for the south coast and Tasmania.

Description:

This legless lizard grows up to 59 centimetres long and has a distinctly, wedge-shaped snout. It varies in colour from cream and plain, through shades of grey, brown, yellow and brick red with various combinations of stripes and lines of spots.

Notes:

Burton’s Snake-lizards feed mainly on skinks, but also geckos, other legless lizards and small snakes.
