Scientific name: Tyto alba

Meaning of name:

Tyto is Greek for night owl. Alba is derived from the Latin word albus, meaning white.

Aboriginal Name:

Yondja (yon’cha).

Distribution:

Found throughout Australia.

Description:

Up to 38 centimetres long with a wingspan up to 100 centimetres.

Notes:

The furthest distance recorded by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme for this species of bird to travel is 1,146km. The oldest bird was recovered dead 7 years 8.1 months after being banded (information as at 23 August 2018).
