Riffle causes ripples
Riffles are the rock lined channels that take water flowing from one lake to another. They are important because they protect the ground from erosion, aerate the water as it moves through the rocks, provide habitat to small critters in the crevices between rocks and provide reptiles with a place to sunbake.
Our riffles need regular repair because rocks become displaced and they no longer functioning as well as they could. In winter the rocks are an irresistible attraction – just the right size to throw into the water and make a big splash. And the local kids can’t help themselves!
The next time you are tempted to make a splash, think about everything a riffle does and the ecological ripples of your actions.
