Pyrorchis nigricans

Common name: Red Beaks

Meaning of name:

Pyrorchis is from the Greek words pyr, meaning fire, and orchis, meaning an orchid. Nigricans is a Latin word meaning blackish. Botanically it means becoming black or blackish. It refers to the blackened appearance of the pressed flowers.

Djubak.

Aboriginal Use:

The tubers of Pyrorchis nigricans were eaten raw or roasted.

Distribution:

Occurs in the southwest of Western Australia. Also occurs in south eastern Australia.

Description:

Up to 8 deep red flowers are held on stems up to 30 centimetres high above a single fleshy leaf. The leaf can be up to 14 centimetres long by 8 centimetres wide.

Notes:

This plant does not flower regularly and is usually identified by its distinctive leaf.

This plant was previously known as Burnettia nigricans.
