Australian White Ibis

Scientific name: Threskiornis molucca

Meaning of name:

Threskiornis is from the Greek words threskos, meaning sacred, and ornis, meaning bird. Molucca refers to the bird being of the Molucca Islands.

Distribution:

Found throughout Australia except for the arid interior.

Description:

Up to 75 centimetres long with a 125 centimetre wingspan.

Notes:

The furthest distance recorded by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme for this species of bird to travel is 3,274 km. The oldest bird recorded was recovered 26 years 0.3 months after being banded (information as at 13 June 2012).
