Hoary-headed Grebe
Scientific name: Poliocephalus poliocephalus
Poliocephalus is from the Greek words polios, meaning grey, and cephalus, meaning head.
Wyooda (why’oo’dar).
Most common in the south west and south east of Australia but are widespread.
Up to 30.5 centimetres long with a 46 centimetre wingspan.
The furthest distance recorded by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme for this species of bird to travel is 596 km (as at 10 June 2012). This distance was travelled in 5.8 months.
The photographs for this species were not taken in the reserves of interest to the FQPB.
