Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo
Scientific name: Zanda latirostris
The meaning of Zanda is not known. Latirostris is from the Latin words latus, meaning broad, and –rostris, meaning billed.
Ngolyenok (n’ole’ye’nawk).
Only found in the southwest of Western Australia from Kalbarri to Cape Arid.
This cockatoo can grow to 56 centimetres long and have a 110 centimetre wingspan.
There are subtle differences between the sexes. Males have a pink eye ring, darker bill and less bright cheek patch than the female.
The furthest distance recorded by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme for this species of bird to travel is 111 km. The oldest bird recorded was recovered 22 years 10.1 months after being banded (information as at 20 June 2012).
