Buff-banded Rail

Scientific name: Hypotaenidia philippensis

Meaning of name:

The meaning of Hypotaenidia is not known. Philippensis refers to the Philippine Islands.

Aboriginal Name:

Kooli (koo’lee).

Distribution:

Can be found along the coastal south-west and east of Australia. Scattered populations are found elsewhere.

Description:

Up to 33 centimetres long with a 52 centimetre wingspan.

Notes:

The furthest distance recorded by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme for this species of bird to travel is 2 km. The oldest bird recorded was recovered 3 years 11.4 months after being banded (information as at 15 June 2012).
