Heteronychus arator

Common name: African Black Beetle

Meaning of name:

Heteronychus is from the words hetero and onychus, meaning variable claw. Arator means ploughman.

Distribution:

It can be found in the wetter coastal areas of Australia.

Description:

This beetle was approximately 12 millimetres long.

Notes:

This is an introduced species and is native to southern Africa. It mainly feeds on the roots of grasses but will also eat a variety of vegetable crops and young or thinly wooded native plants.
