Meaning of name: The meaning of Pinus is not known. Pinaster is from the Latin pinus, meaning pine, and the suffix –aster, indicating resemblance but with an implication of inferiority.
Distribution: Found from Perth to Albany.
Remarks: A tree to 40 metres tall with brown flowers during September and October. Native to the Mediterranean.

The seeds of these trees are being brought into the reserves by Black Cockatoos. The birds fly over from nearby plantation trees and drop the seed cones.
