Dusky MoorhenScientific name: Gallinula tenebrosa

Meaning of name: Gallinula is Latin for a little hen or chicken. Tenebrosa is from the Latin word tenebrosus, meaning dark.

Distribution: Found in the south west of Western Australia with outlying populations around Esperance, Dampier and Port Hedland. Widespread in the eastern states.

Description: Up to 40cm long with a 65cm wingspan.

Notes: The furthest distance recorded by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme for this species of bird to travel is 286km. The oldest bird recorded was still alive when its band was read in February 1974, 8 years 11.8 months after being banded (information as at 15 June 2012).
