Arenopsaltria fulloCommon name: Sandgrinder
Distribution: Coastal districts of Western Australia from Kalbarri to Margaret River.
Description: Main body colour either black or brown. There is a white band across the body but this can be indistinct on some specimens. The wings are usually 28mm – 34mm long. There are dark markings on some of the veins in the wings.
Notes: Occurs in open heathland and woodland with heath undergrowth. Banksia trees are often favoured. The song is a continuous harsh call which is normally made only in full sunshine. The adults emerge from October and live to late March.
We have seen this cicada in December, January and February.
